Over the centuries, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Encina has brought together an extraordinary collection of liturgical objects crafted by some of the finest silversmiths' workshops. Today, these remarkable works can be admired in the Basilica Treasury, the Museum of Sacred Art of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Encina.
The museum was created to showcase the municipality's exceptional religious heritage, providing a modern, accessible and highly interpretative space that enables visitors to understand the historical, artistic and spiritual richness of El Bierzo. The collection brings together works of outstanding importance from the basilica itself and from several parish churches across the municipality, creating a coherent exhibition that illustrates the evolution of sacred art in Ponferrada and its surrounding area.
Within this narrative, the Bercian Tebaida—one of the most remarkable monastic and cultural landscapes in north-western Spain—occupies a prominent place. Its eremitic tradition and the preservation of medieval churches and monasteries help explain the importance of this territory in shaping cultural and religious identities that continue to define the region today.
The museum is closely connected with the historic quarter, the Camino de Santiago and the city's existing network of museums. The inclusion of a visit to the basilica's tower as part of the museum experience offers visitors a distinctive highlight: from the top, they can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the city while gaining a deeper understanding of its urban development and its relationship with the landscape of El Bierzo.
